Natural stone retaining walls
Laid with a slight lean back into the bank, which is what gives a stone wall its strength. The most expensive option and the one that looks right on older property.
Retaining Walls
Retaining walls are essential for managing level changes, supporting raised areas and creating structure within sloped gardens. SP Outdoor Solutions builds retaining walls across County Durham and the North East using natural stone, brick, block, sleepers and gabion systems, with the correct foundations and drainage for long-term performance.
why choose us
A retaining wall needs more than a good finish. SP Outdoor Solutions considers the height, ground conditions, foundations and drainage requirements before construction begins, ensuring the wall is built to perform properly and remain stable over time.
We also make sure the finished wall works with the wider garden design, whether it is creating new levels, supporting a raised area or forming part of a patio, steps or planting scheme. The result is a strong, practical structure that looks considered and built to last.
WHAT WE OFFER
Strong, well-built retaining walls designed to manage levels, support landscaping and complement the wider garden.
Laid with a slight lean back into the bank, which is what gives a stone wall its strength. The most expensive option and the one that looks right on older property.
Dense block or engineering brick, with reinforcement and filled cores where the height calls for it. Rendered or faced afterwards if you want it to disappear.
Treated timber tied back and pinned rather than stacked and hoped for. The quickest and cheapest option, though timber has a finite life — around twenty years in this climate.
Mesh baskets filled with stone. They drain through themselves, so there is no separate drainage layer to build, and they tolerate slight ground movement without cracking.
Granular backfill, a land drain at the base and weep holes through the face. Water trapped behind a wall is what pushes it over — far more often than the weight of the soil.
Turning a sloping garden into usable flat ground. Often two lower walls in sequence work better than one tall one — cheaper to build and easier to plant.
Lower walls holding growing beds rather than a hillside, with a membrane behind the face so wet soil does not stain through to the outside.
Above about a metre, a retaining wall wants designing rather than estimating. Over a metre next to a highway it also needs planning permission, and we will tell you before you commit.
